The American Staffordshire Terrier comes in an amazing range of colours and the are varying shades within each colour also. All colours can be found with or without white markings on the legs, chest, face and neck. If they have a full white head or a lot of white on the body they are referred to as "pied" See further down this page for photos of different coloured pieds.

"Brindle" comes in many variations and there is always ongoing debate on exactly what you name each variation of brindle. We have listed 4 varieties below.

SABLE
Sable is an uncommon face marking or pattern, made by darker hairs around the face, in a heart shape.
It is sometimes confused with tan points but is not the same. It can occur on reds and fawns and with or without a white blaze on the face.

SMUT
Smut is a black or dark ticking that can occur over any coat colour, but is mostly found in reds and fawns. It is similar to sable, but the sable is always in the heart shape pattern, where as smut or ticking is in no particular pattern at all. Some examples pictured below.
The breed standard states that some colours are not to be encouraged. This can be quite a controversial issue, the coloured listed as not to be encouraged are black & tan, all white, more than 80% white and liver. Some examples of these colours are listed below.
